Life Path Compatibility Calculator
Enter two dates of birth and the calculator finds both life path numbers and shows how numerology reads the pair: a natural match, compatible, neutral or challenging, with what each of you brings and where you may clash. It runs in your browser, so the dates are not sent anywhere.
Check your compatibility
Expressive, idealistic and generous: a pair of art and meaning. Both are dreamers, so practical matters can slide.
A question for you both: Which dream gets a date in the calendar?
More about the pairing and both numbers
A life path number is one digit, shared by one person in nine. A full chart reads the whole date of birth as 37 positions and the Pythagorean square. Open both charts free.
How the calculator works
- A life path number for each date. All the digits of the date of birth are added together, and the result is reduced until one number from 1 to 9 is left. 23 August 1985 gives 2 + 3 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 36, then 3 + 6 = 9.
- Master numbers stay whole. If the sum reaches 11, 22 or 33, the reduction stops there. For the chart, a master number is read through its root: 11 as 2, 22 as 4, 33 as 6.
- The pair is looked up in the chart. The calculator shows the level of the pairing, what each of you brings, where you may clash and a question to talk about.
The life path number itself is explained in our guide to the life path number, including why the two usual ways of adding the digits give one person in seven a different number. If that happens with one of your dates, the calculator tells you.
The three groups behind the chart
Most life path compatibility charts in American numerology rest on one idea: the numbers fall into three groups, and numbers from the same group understand each other without effort. Pairs within a group are called natural matches.
- 1, 5 and 7: the independents. Freedom, their own space and thinking for themselves.
- 2, 4 and 8: the builders. Security, structure and the practical side of life.
- 3, 6 and 9: the heart numbers. Feeling, expression and care for others.
Between the groups the picture is less simple: some cross pairs are compatible, some neutral and some challenging. The chart below shows all of them.
Life path compatibility chart
Find your number in the first column and your partner’s number in the top row. Every square links to the description of that pairing.
- Natural match: same group, an easy understanding.
- Compatible: different strengths that fit together.
- Neutral: neither easy nor hard; it depends on the two people.
- Challenging: real differences that take conscious effort.
By this chart, one random couple in three is a natural match, and slightly more, 35%, is challenging. We counted this over every date of birth from 1940 to 2009: life path numbers are spread almost evenly among people, so a challenging pair is as ordinary as an ideal one.
Compatibility for each life path number
Find your number below. Each pairing is described once, under the smaller of the two numbers; the links take you straight to it.
Life path 1: the initiator
Ones love with energy and loyalty, and they need a partner with a life of their own. Respect matters more to them than reassurance. The hard part is compromise: a 1 would rather decide than discuss.
Natural match: 1, 5, 7 · Compatible: 3, 9 · Neutral: 8 · Challenging: 2, 4, 6
1 & 1 Natural match
Two initiators bring energy, ambition and real respect for each other’s independence. The friction comes from the same place: two leaders and nobody who wants to follow.
A question for you both: Who leads what, and do you take turns?
1 & 2 Challenging
The 1 leads and the 2 supports, and for a while that can feel ideal. Over time the 1 may overlook what the 2 feels, and the 2 may disappear into the 1’s plans.
A question for you both: Does the quieter one get the last word sometimes?
1 & 3 Compatible
The 1 brings drive, the 3 brings ideas, humour and people. A lively, social pair. The 1 wants results and the 3 wants fun, so projects can be left half done.
A question for you both: Which shared idea will you actually finish?
1 & 4 Challenging
The 1 wants speed and the 4 wants a plan. Together they can build a great deal, as long as the 1 respects the process and the 4 accepts that plans change.
A question for you both: Where does speed help you, and where does it cost you?
1 & 5 Natural match
Both value freedom, so this pair is quick, adventurous and rarely bored. The risk is that nobody tends the home base, and restlessness pulls them in different directions.
A question for you both: What keeps you coming back to each other?
1 & 6 Challenging
The 6 cares for the home while the 1 goes out to conquer the world. The 6 can feel taken for granted, and the 1 can feel managed.
A question for you both: Is the care in this home flowing both ways?
1 & 7 Natural match
Two independent people who respect each other’s space: the 1 acts, the 7 thinks. The risk is distance, two lives lived side by side rather than together.
A question for you both: When did you last tell each other what is going on inside?
1 & 8 Neutral
Two strong wills, both ambitious. This pair becomes either a power couple or a power struggle, and the difference lies in how they share decisions.
A question for you both: Are you a team, or two bosses?
1 & 9 Compatible
The 1 starts things and the 9 sees the big picture, a pair of beginnings and endings. The 1’s focus on its own goals can clash with the 9’s generosity towards everyone.
A question for you both: Whose dream are you working on this year?
Life path 2: the partner
Twos are attentive, tender and loyal, and they notice what a partner feels before it is said. They need closeness and reassurance. The hard part is asking for what they need instead of waiting to be noticed.
Natural match: 2, 4, 8 · Compatible: 3, 6 · Neutral: 9 · Challenging: 1, 5, 7
2 & 2 Natural match
Gentle, attentive and harmonious: two twos read each other easily. The risk is avoiding every conflict until the unsaid things pile up.
A question for you both: What have you both been too polite to say?
2 & 3 Compatible
The 2 listens and the 3 talks, and there is warmth and play in that. The 3’s scattered energy can unsettle the 2, who needs things to feel steady.
A question for you both: Does the listener ever get listened to?
2 & 4 Natural match
Security and loyalty: the 4 builds and the 2 makes it warm. A steady, faithful pair. The risk is routine and too much caution.
A question for you both: When did you last surprise each other?
2 & 5 Challenging
The 2 wants closeness and stability, the 5 wants change and space. The attraction of opposites is real here, but it needs clear agreements.
A question for you both: How much freedom and how much closeness does each of you need?
2 & 6 Compatible
Two caring numbers: a tender pair centred on home and the people they love. The risk is that both put others first and neither asks for anything.
A question for you both: Who looks after the two of you?
2 & 7 Challenging
The 2 wants emotional closeness, the 7 needs solitude and tends to think rather than feel out loud. The 2 can feel shut out, the 7 crowded.
A question for you both: How do you say “I need space” without it sounding like “go away”?
2 & 8 Natural match
A classic partnership: the 8 drives outward success and the 2 brings support and diplomacy. The risk is that the 2’s needs get absorbed into the 8’s goals.
A question for you both: Is the success shared, or only supported?
2 & 9 Neutral
Both are compassionate. The 9 gives to the whole world, while the 2 wants to be the one who matters most.
A question for you both: Is there enough of each of you left for the other?
Life path 3: the communicator
Threes love with words, humour and affection, and a relationship with them is rarely quiet. They need conversation and play. The hard part is routine, and staying when the fun runs low.
Natural match: 3, 6, 9 · Compatible: 1, 2, 5 · Challenging: 4, 7, 8
3 & 3 Natural match
Fun, creative, social and talkative: two threes are rarely bored. The risk is that nobody handles the bills, and small dramas grow large.
A question for you both: Who deals with the boring parts, and is that fair?
3 & 4 Challenging
The 3 improvises and the 4 plans. The 4 can find the 3 scattered, the 3 can find the 4 rigid, yet each has exactly what the other lacks.
A question for you both: What could each of you learn from the other’s way of working?
3 & 5 Compatible
Lively, curious and adventurous, this pair never runs out of things to do. The risk is little stability and too many decisions made on impulse.
A question for you both: What are you building together, beyond the next adventure?
3 & 6 Natural match
Creativity meets care: a warm home full of laughter. The risk is that the 6 becomes over-responsible and the 3 under-responsible.
A question for you both: Is the load at home really shared?
3 & 7 Challenging
The 3 lives outward and the 7 inward. The 3 wants talk and company, the 7 wants quiet and depth.
A question for you both: Can you meet halfway between a party and a library?
3 & 8 Challenging
The 8 is focused on results, the 3 on joy. The 8 can see the 3 as unserious, and the 3 can see the 8 as joyless.
A question for you both: What would success look like if it were also fun?
3 & 9 Natural match
Expressive, idealistic and generous: a pair of art and meaning. Both are dreamers, so practical matters can slide.
A question for you both: Which dream gets a date in the calendar?
Life path 4: the builder
Fours show love through reliability: they turn up, keep promises and fix things. They need honesty and a feeling of safety. The hard part is spontaneity and showing feelings in words.
Natural match: 2, 4, 8 · Compatible: 6, 7 · Challenging: 1, 3, 5, 9
4 & 4 Natural match
Reliable, loyal and steady. Two fours build a life that lasts. The risk is rigidity: two stubborn people and a routine nobody dares to change.
A question for you both: Where could you both loosen your grip?
4 & 5 Challenging
Classic opposites: the 4 wants plans and stability, the 5 wants freedom and change. The 4 can feel unsafe, the 5 caged.
A question for you both: What can stay fixed, and what can be allowed to change?
4 & 6 Compatible
Responsibility, home and family: a dependable pair that others lean on. The risk is that duty crowds out romance.
A question for you both: When did you last do something just for the two of you?
4 & 7 Compatible
Both are serious, private and thorough, and they respect each other’s quiet. The risk is emotional distance, with feelings left unspoken.
A question for you both: Who says the feelings out loud in this relationship?
4 & 8 Natural match
Two builders with shared goals: practical, hard-working, a natural team. The risk is that work becomes the whole relationship.
A question for you both: What is all the building for?
4 & 9 Challenging
The 4 thinks concretely and close to home, the 9 broadly and ideally. The 4 can see the 9 as unrealistic, the 9 can see the 4 as narrow.
A question for you both: How does a big ideal become a weekly habit?
Life path 5: the free spirit
Fives bring adventure, curiosity and change, and they share experiences generously. They need room to move. The hard part is routine, and the word “forever”.
Natural match: 1, 5, 7 · Compatible: 3, 9 · Neutral: 8 · Challenging: 2, 4, 6
5 & 5 Natural match
Adventure, travel and freedom: an exciting pair. The risk is that nothing anchors them, and commitment keeps being postponed.
A question for you both: What does commitment mean to two people who love freedom?
5 & 6 Challenging
The 6 wants home and responsibility, the 5 wants freedom. The 6 may try to settle the 5, and the 5 may resist.
A question for you both: Can home be a base rather than a cage?
5 & 7 Natural match
Two kinds of curiosity: the 5 explores the world, the 7 explores ideas, and both respect independence. The risk is too little emotional closeness.
A question for you both: What do you discover together rather than separately?
5 & 8 Neutral
Both are energetic and ambitious in their own ways. The 8 likes control, and the 5 resists it.
A question for you both: Who sets the rules, and can they be renegotiated?
5 & 9 Compatible
Open-minded and worldly, this pair combines adventure with ideals. The risk is that neither grounds the other.
A question for you both: Where are you both actually going?
Life path 6: the carer
Sixes love by caring: home, family, meals, remembered details. They need to feel appreciated. The hard part is boundaries, and letting someone else take care of them.
Natural match: 3, 6, 9 · Compatible: 2, 4, 8 · Challenging: 1, 5, 7
6 & 6 Natural match
Devoted, caring and centred on family. The risk is smothering each other and turning care into self-sacrifice.
A question for you both: Do you let each other care for you, not only the other way round?
6 & 7 Challenging
The 6 shows love through care and closeness, the 7 through thought, and it needs time alone. The 6 can feel unloved, the 7 crowded.
A question for you both: How does each of you show love, and does the other recognise it?
6 & 8 Compatible
The 8 provides and the 6 nurtures: a strong family pair. The risk is roles that fit one partner better than the other.
A question for you both: Do your roles still fit you both?
6 & 9 Natural match
Shared compassion: a pair devoted to family and to the wider world. The risk is giving everything to others and keeping nothing for themselves.
A question for you both: What do you keep just for the two of you?
Life path 7: the seeker
Sevens love quietly and deeply, often through ideas and long conversations. They need space and trust. The hard part is saying what they feel, and letting a partner all the way in.
Natural match: 1, 5, 7 · Compatible: 4 · Neutral: 9 · Challenging: 2, 3, 6, 8
7 & 7 Natural match
Deep, quiet and thoughtful: two sevens understand each other’s need for solitude. The risk is two hermits, with nobody reaching out first.
A question for you both: Who opens the door when you both withdraw?
7 & 8 Challenging
The 8 looks outward, to ambition and the material world; the 7 looks inward. The 8 can see the 7 as impractical, the 7 can see the 8 as shallow.
A question for you both: Can you respect what the other is chasing?
7 & 9 Neutral
Both are philosophical. The 9 reaches out to humanity while the 7 keeps to itself, and they meet in questions of meaning.
A question for you both: Which big question do you love to explore together?
Life path 8: the achiever
Eights love by providing and protecting, and they admire a partner who is strong in their own right. They need respect. The hard part is control, and leaving work at the door.
Natural match: 2, 4, 8 · Compatible: 6 · Neutral: 1, 5 · Challenging: 3, 7, 9
8 & 8 Natural match
Ambitious and driven, two eights make a formidable team. The risk is a contest of wills, and work coming before love.
A question for you both: Who wins when you disagree, and does it have to be anyone?
8 & 9 Challenging
The 8 values material success, the 9 idealism and giving. Money and values are where this pair tends to clash.
A question for you both: What is money for in your life together?
Life path 9: the humanitarian
Nines love generously and with ideals, and they want a partner who shares their values. They need meaning. The hard part is their own needs, and letting go of what is over.
Natural match: 3, 6, 9 · Compatible: 1, 5 · Neutral: 2, 7 · Challenging: 4, 8
9 & 9 Natural match
Idealistic, compassionate and generous, two nines share causes and a wide view of the world. The risk is that the practical side of life is left to chance.
A question for you both: Who looks after the practical side of your ideals?
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 in a couple
A master number is read through its root, so the chart uses 2 for 11, 4 for 22 and 6 for 33. Numerologists add that the master number turns up the volume:
11 is read as a 2 with a stronger charge: more intuition and sensitivity, and more nervous tension. What is said about 2 applies, only more intensely.
22 is read as a 4 on a larger scale: bigger plans and a heavier sense of duty. What is said about 4 applies, with higher stakes.
33 is read as a 6 at its highest: care for many people at once, and a stronger pull towards self-sacrifice. What is said about 6 applies, only more so.
Why compatibility charts disagree
There is no single life path compatibility chart. Every numerology book and website has its own, and they contradict each other more often than you might expect. A few examples from popular sites:
- 1 and 4 is among the best matches for a 1 in a widely shared list from In The Know, and a challenging pair in the three-group chart, as GolfLink publishes it.
- 2 and 7 is challenging in the three-group chart, but one of the best matches for a 7 on YourTango.
- 2 and 9 is neutral in the three-group chart, but among the best romantic matches for a 2 on Marriage.com.
We use the three-group chart because it is the most common and because it rests on a clear idea rather than a list of preferences. Read your result as you would read any tradition: as a starting point for a conversation, not as a verdict.
Does numerology compatibility work?
No study has shown that life path numbers predict how well a couple will get on. The largest test of a similar idea looked at star signs: in 2007 the sociologist David Voas, at the University of Manchester, examined the birthdays of more than ten million married couples in England and Wales and found that signs made no difference to who married whom, or to who stayed married.
We know of no comparable test of life path numbers. What a compatibility reading can do is give two people a shared language for their differences. The questions under each pairing are there for that.
Two numbers, or two whole dates
A life path number squeezes a date of birth into one digit shared by about one person in nine. A Sacred Avatar chart reads the whole date: 37 positions, from character and sources of energy to purpose, plus the Pythagorean square. Open your own chart free, and your partner’s.

Questions
How do you calculate life path compatibility?
Find each person’s life path number: add all the digits of the date of birth until one number from 1 to 9 is left, stopping at 11, 22 or 33. Then look up the pair in a compatibility chart. The calculator above does both at once.
Which life path numbers are most compatible?
In the most common chart, numbers from the same group are natural matches: 1, 5 and 7; 2, 4 and 8; 3, 6 and 9. Other charts disagree, so treat any “best match” list as tradition, not fact.
Which life path numbers are not compatible?
The chart calls some pairs challenging, for example 4 and 5, or 7 and 8. Challenging means the two people want different things and need clear agreements. About one random couple in three falls into this group.
How do master numbers 11, 22 and 33 work in compatibility?
They are read through their root: 11 as 2, 22 as 4 and 33 as 6. Numerologists add that the master number makes the traits of the root stronger.
Can numerology predict whether a relationship will last?
No. No study has shown that numbers predict how a relationship goes. The chart describes traditional themes that can start a conversation, not a future.
Are the dates of birth stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and the dates are not sent anywhere. A date reaches Sacred Avatar only if you choose to open a full chart.
Why does another site give a different result?
Because compatibility charts disagree, and because there are two common ways to add the digits of a date. This calculator uses the three-group chart and adds all the digits at once; if the other method gives one of you a different number, it tells you.
